June 2006:
$120,000 Hawai‘i Tourism Authority grant to County Department of Research and Development for a Hilo Bayfront Trails Master Plan

June 2009:
HBFT Master Plan completed

April 2010:
Final Environmental Assessment completed by the County of Hawai‘i

April 2011:
Special Management Area (“SMA”) Use Permit granted by Hawai‘i County Planning Commission and Friends of Hilo Bayfront Trails organized

November 2012:
Hilo Bayfront Trails Inc. obtained 501(c)(3) status

September 2013:
Trail incorporated into Wailoa River State Recreation Area improvements

October 2013:
Preliminary Award of Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Grant

November 2014:
County officially awarded LWCF funds for Section 1 of HBFT, which includes the Mo‘oheau to Canoe Hale makai segment and the Waiolama Soccer Park loop

May 2014:
Engineering design and permits for Section 1 complete

January 2015
Completion of Feasibility Study by Creative Fundraising Associates Inc.


Summer 2015:
Ceremonial groundbreaking for Section 1

September 2015:
Construction will begin on Section 1

Early 2016:
Construction will begin on Section 2, Wailoa Park (pavilion side)
